Safely update IE Trusted sites through Group Policy

The normal way of adding Trusted Sites to IE through group policy will lock down adding trusted sites so users cannot add their own. And enforcing it after the fact will overwrite what the user already has added. These directions will show you how to safely add trusted sites, while letting users add their own sites.

  1. Create a group policy
  2. Edit the policy
  3. Go to User Configuration > Preferences > Windows Settings > Registry
  4. Right click and create a new Registry item
  5. Use these properties
    1. Action: Update
    2. Hive: HKCU
    3. Key Path: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\thedomainyouwanttoadd.com
    4. Value Name: https
    5. Value Type: REG_DWORD
    6. Value Data: 2
  6. Click OK and close Group Policy editor
  7. Link your GPO to a OU
